Design 2171 - Kialoa III

How's this for spreading some canvas? Here we have a light spinnaker set from a pole, a mizzen spinnaker and looking at the sail plan (below - zoom in on box at upper left) the other sail is either the "wind seeker", the "tall boy" or the "big boy".

This is the second Kialoa for Jim Kilroy (see posted article regarding design #1713). She was constructed of aluminum by Palmer Johnson of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and launched in 1974.

Here are the plans.

Here's an article from the period.

Principal Dimensions
LOA 79'-0"
LWL 62'-6"
Beam 17'-5"
Draft 11'-7"
Displacement 84,440 lbs
Ballast 35,000 lbs
Sail Area 2,733 sq ft

  1. Great article. Wonderful photos.

    One addendum : it mentions:

the other sail is either the "wind seeker", the "tall boy" or the "big boy".

Surely it can only be the "big boy" (aka 'blooper')?
