Design 711 - Bolero

One of the best known classic S&S designs, Bolero was built by Henry B. Nevins of City Island, New York. She was launched in 1949. It has been said that Mr. Nevins told his wife that Bolero would be his last yacht. He died the following year at age 72.

Bolero was designed and built for John Nicholas Brown, who was undersecretary of the United States Navy at the time as well as vice-commodore of the New York Yacht Club. No expense was spared in her construction.

She has undergone numerous restorations in her lifetime. The most recent was by far the most extensive, by Rockport Marine of Maine. Click here to learn more about it. There is also a new beautifully written book: In a Class by Herself: The Yawl BOLERO and the Passion for Craftsmanship, by John Rousmaniere. Click here to read more about it.

Here are the plans.

  1. one of my all time favorite yachts since I first saw her in late 70's early 80's.
In very good shape and run down in Ft laud.Hoping it would be brought back any time it was down.Great to here it's doing good again, best lines best name. Thanks

  2. Those who "claim" to have sailed on her could man a modern super carrier today. In the 68 SORC when I was on her she was run down needing lots of work, but she was strong, powerful and fast. A joy to sail!

    1. I was aboard Bolero in Rodney Bay St Lucia, At that time she was being restored in 1980. With her black hull. What a Beauty. Denis Pendergrass

  3. I had the pleasure to sail her in Newport the summer of 2013. Completely and beautiufully restored by the Kane family (for the 2nd time during their current ownership). What a beauty! What a feel at the helm in some 20 knots breeze. Could imagine my grandfathers joy during his ownership in the late 1950ies!

  4. She was owned by Chas and Betty White of Huntington NY while they were members of Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club in the late 60's. She was back in the harbor this weekend.. just stunning!

  5. Can anyone tell me about Sally Anne Langmuir who owned Bolero at Cowes in 1962. Thanks. Mike email; flames@xtra.co.nz
