Design 658 - Chantey

This little centerboard sloop was built for cruising on the Great South Bay of Long Island as well as southern New England in general. She was constructed of wood by the Jakobsen Shipyard of Oyster Bay, New York. She was launched in 1947.

Here's a brief article from The Rudder magazine. Please double click for zoom.

And here is the general arrangement plan.

Principal Dimensions
LOA 29'-7"
LWL 20'-8"
Beam 8'-6"
Draft 3'-0"

  1. I imagine the lines for Chantey were drawn by Francis Kinney. She is so close in shape and details to Fidelia and Tremolino as shown in Skene's Elements.

  2. It was Al Mason. Frank Kinney did not join the firm until 1970 so he was a very different generation of designers.

  3. Thanks! That's good to know. I met Al in 1975 here in Maine as I was drafting a plan and he gave me wonderful tips about it. Very nice man.
